What is Expressive Arts?

Expressive art uses different art creation techniques, such as painting, drawing, dancing, poetry, and photography as a way to explore ourselves and our place in the world. We use our 5 senses to explore the process of art creation – what we see, hear, taste, smell, and feel as we create art allows us to connect to ourselves in a different way. Exploring our body tension, colors used, textures, rhythm, weight, shapes, and our energy levels can all contribute to the expressive art process.

Basically, our art becomes the bridge between our inner and outer worlds. We express our

internal world into the art, and in turn we can ask the art what it wants us to know or learn about

ourselves.

How is CRIPSiE using Expressive Arts?

We have started a monthly expressive art group that invites us to be creative and then explore

our art. We then share our art and learnings with each other. The sharing of our art is a very important part of the process – it connects us because we get to see a glimpse into each other’s internal worlds – we might learn more about each other’s emotions, thoughts, imaginings, memories, experiences, and ways of being.

Please join us in our monthly expressive art group on the last Sunday of each month from 6-7pm via Zoom.

Theme and Variation

In this class, we will start with some improvisational warm-up games as a group and then move into the lesson of theme and variation. This choreographic tool helps us see movement in different ways and create a huge amount of vocabulary. We will be working in small groups and sharing studies on each variation as we learn about each; Addition, Subtraction, Scramble, Duration, Repetition, Inversion and Retrograde.

March 8, 2020 – Ainsley Hillyard

Structure

In this class, we will start with some improvisational warm-up games as a group and then move into the lesson of how to structure your dance. This choreographic tool helps us take our movement vocabulary and put it into a structure. Strictures help us organize our thoughts and amplify what we are trying to say in our work. We will be working in small groups and sharing studies on each structure as we learn about each; cyclical, contrast, climax, musical and improvisation.

March 15, 2020 – Ainsley Hillyard

Making meaning

In this class, we will do several improvisational studies in small groups and perform them for the class. The class focus is to critique and talk about what we are seeing in the studies and how we attach meaning to it. We will be discussing what audiences are seeing, common ideas and images in popular culture and how we need to look past our own biases and see our work through the eyes of others.

March 22, 2020  –  Alison Neuman

The Business of Choreography

In this class, we will discuss the business of being an emerging choreographer. Topics we will cover will include renting spaces, contracts, damage deposits, liability insurance, music composition, performance royalties, professionalism, safe space guidelines, choreographer process guidelines and a brief discussion on grants.

March 29, 2020  – Julie Ferguson
